Domestic abuse is a systematic pattern of coercive behavior for the sole purpose of manipulating a partner in an intimate relationship. Domestic abuse can take many forms: verbal, emotional, financial, sexual, physical or psychological.

SHALVA CLINICAL SERVICES FYE ’09 (JUNE 1, 2008 – MAY 31, 2009)
- 266 clients were provided therapeutic services by 2.5 part-time Master’s level ICDVP therapists
- 13% were former clients returning for additional services
- 3 three-week, and 1 six-week therapeutic support groups sessions (1.5 hour each) with two therapists
- 100 clients (38%) had legal issues addressed by SHALVA
- 16 Monthly clinical network meetings (Jewish & City Wide)

- Clients represent a cross-section of Jewish affiliations, educational and economic backgrounds
- Client ages range from teenagers to senior citizens
- 97 % are female
- 13% call for the first time prior to their two-year wedding anniversary
- 58% call for the first time after 10 years of marriage through retirement age
- 52% are living with their partners while seeking therapeutic services
- 41% live alone or with extended family
- 81% have college/graduate degrees

- 1 out of 4 (25%) of women will experience some form of intimate partner abuse in their lifetime.
- For each person who seeks help, at least four remain silent.
- Battering is the single greatest cause of injury to women.
- 95% of reported domestic abuse victims are women.
- 70% of abused women are injured after separation or divorce.
- 79% of violent children have witnessed violence between their parents.
- There are 3 times as many animal shelters in the U.S. than shelters for battered women.
