SHALVA

 

Abuse has been the legacy handed down from generation to generation; it is not the Jewish legacy that we want to pass on to our children.

SHALVA’s mission is to increase community awareness about domestic abuse by providing a wide range of prevention and education programming. Settings range from intimate parlor meetings to large organizational groups.

Understanding Domestic Abuse in the Jewish Community

A 60-minute interactive program discussing all aspects of domestic abuse. Program is suitable for adults and covers information as:

  • Verbal, physical, sexual and economic abuse
  • Effects of abuse on children
  • Profile of an abuser
  • Warning signs
  • Why do people stay

House Parties

SHALVA House Parties are a great way to introduce SHALVA to your network of personal contacts and to inform the community about SHALVA’s services. This is not a fundraiser, but rather a friendraiser – an intimate way to learn about SHALVA. You can host a party at your home, office or at a location of your choice.

Healthy Relationships

A 60-minute interactive program focusing on the characteristics of a healthy relationship. Suitable for adults. Examines some basic information on abusive relationships, but primarily focuses on healthy relationships.

 

Bully-Proofing Your Child

A 60-minute program focusing on the specific issues of bullying, teasing, the power of the bystander and the role of adults as it relates to their children’s experiences in these areas. This program is geared to an adult audience.

 

Safe Dating Practices

A 60-minute program specifically for singles of any age. Covers such information as:

  • Basic information on healthy, unhealthy and abusive relationships
  • Warning signs of potentially abusive relationships
  • How to talk to a friend who might be in an abusive relationship

 

Understanding the Culture of Middle School

A 90-minute program that may be geared for parents alone or in combination with their children. The program offers an interactive look at the issues facing the middle school child. This workshop includes such issues as inclusion and exclusion, teasing, bullying and friendships.

 

Mother/Daughter Book Group

A 45-minute program for middle school girls. This program focuses on the discussion of the book The Girls. This fictionalized account addresses the issues of preadolescent girls. This program works well with 4th–6th grade girls.

 

Setting up a Safe and Inclusive Culture in Your Classroom**

A 90-minute program for educators. It focuses on the specific issues of bullying, teasing, the power of the bystander and the role of adults and teachers as it relates to the issues that go on in a classroom.

 

Cyberbullying

A 60-minute program can be done as a students-only program or parent and student program. The program is designed for middle school students and focuses on what cyberbullying is and how to respond to it whether you are a victim or a bystander. The program also focuses on parental issues around this topic.

 

Healthy Relationships for Young Adults

A 60-minute program, using a video format to,explore the issues of healthy relationships for young adults through facilitated discussion. Suitable for teens and/or their parents.

**A similar program can be geared to counselors in day and overnight camps.
